The Dragon-Lake Temple (pronounced as “Longhu Temple") is located in Hsiao-Kang District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The temple boasts a long history and has been recognized as an intangible cultural asset by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government. It is now government-recognized, the earliest temple in Taiwan exclusively dedicated to worshiping the “King of Ghost" (Great Master), standing as a testament to the evolution of local religious beliefs.
The temple’s origins trace back to more than 200 years of Qianlong’s reign during the Qing Dynasty (1795 AD), when the scholar Lee Guozhen initiated its construction in Gangzaiqian Village. Since the 23rd year of Jiaqing’s reign, the Qing Dynasty (1818 AD), it has undergone several renovations. It has consistently served as the local spiritual center, with the deities safeguarding the community for over two centuries.
Owing to its traditional significance, the “King of Ghost Festival" (Great Master Festival) at Dragon-Lake Temple (Longhu Temple) was officially registered as a municipal intangible cultural asset under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act in 2024.
This temple, with a history spanning more than 200 years, also enshrines deities such as Xuantian Shangdi (Emperor Xuantian), Zhusheng Niangniang (Goddess of Child Birt), Tudigong (Lord of the Land), and many other Lords. It remains a vital source of community cohesion, welcoming visitors to experience and partake in traditional folk religious practices.
